Water & Electric Department Performing Village-Wide Leak Detection

Leaking water hose

Consulting Engineering, Inc. has been hired to perform leak detection services on the Village’s potable (drinking) water system to identify and reduce unaccounted water loss. Field work is expected to begin in late November and take three weeks. All field technicians and vehicles should be clearly identified with the Consulting Engineering, Inc.'s name.

Using acoustic technologies, field technicians will survey approximately 72 miles of water mains and 4,500 water services to locate undetected water leaks. Unlike water main breaks, which result in an outpouring of water that is readily apparent, water leaks are difficult to locate. Over time, these small leaks can lead to tens of thousands of gallons of lost water. Left unrepaired, these leaks have the potential to lead to more extensive repairs and increase operating costs. Early detection of water leaks protects the distribution infrastructure, improves the system’s efficiency, and improves environmental sustainability by reducing the amount of water required to serve the Village.

Leak detection services were secured through a multi-community joint bidding process. For further information about the Leak Detection Program, please contact the Water & Electric Department's non-emergency number at 847-716-3558.
